A hospital is a place for intensive care and treatment of medical patients, with facilities for long-term stays. Hospitals are generally equipped to treat a variety of medical emergencies, and also to provide extended care for ailments that require intensive medical supervision. Hospitals are often affiliated with universities and other institutions; in this case they remain classified as hospitals, and not as university or other institutional buildings unless the usage is shared with those functions. Teaching hospitals are only listed as educational buildings if there are classrooms inside. Research hospitals can be listed as laboratories only if a significant portion of the space is reserved for non-care-related research activity.
