Faits

  • The building is a triangular tower with a knife-like south edge which leans 33 feet (1 foot per floor) over Chestnut Street.
  • The windows are arranged in an unusual pattern, like stacked bricks. The original design called for simple stripes instead.
  • An inverted conical wall fills the gap between the east and west planes under the point. Within this section of the facade no two window panels are the same size.
  • The outward tilt of the south edge is a counterpoint to the tapering sides of the nearby John Hancock Center.
  • For a few minutes before high noon, the sun shines on both sides of the building.
  • The main staircase in the lobby narrows towards the top, in keeping with the triangular shape of the building but also for dramatic effect.
  • The triangular plan leaves space for an atrium lobby on the southwest portion of the lot. The atrium has a large curved window.
  • The building is clad in white glass.
  • This is the tallest all-hotel building constructed in Chicago since the Swissôtel Chicago was completed in 1989.
  • Located on the edge of a small triangular park between Rush and Wabash Streets.
  • At the bottom of the main staircase the lobby floor is inlaid with square lights which constantly change color.
