Faits

  • Polyhedral projections in the cornice, finials, and arcade roof were based on the shape of gypsum crystals.
  • The building's cladding was especially luxuriant, with white marble piers, black slate spandrels, and bluish-gray tinted glass.
  • The U.S. Gypsum Building was the first modern office skyscraper in Chicago to be demolished.
  • A group of plaster cast sculptures by Edgar Miller depicting the making and use of gypsum products were hung on the lobby walls.
  • Each corner was notched, with a thin marble spire rising from the inside corner to a finial at the top. Four additional finials decorated each side of the roof.
  • The tower was rotated 45° from the direction of the street grid, forming small triangular plazas at each corner of the lot.
  • The building won architectural awards when it was built for incorporating eight corner offices per floor.
