Faits

  • The Hotel Charlotte was built as a luxury hotel by local business leaders and by citizen subscription. After it opened in March, 1924, it quickly became one of the city's leading social centers and a symbol of the city's growth as a major economic center.
  • The steel frame construction was sheathed in gray granite and buff colored brick. Ornamentation was limited to the lower and attic sections.
  • An addition in the late 1930s on the building's south side expanded the number of rooms from 250 to 400.
  • Despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, it was torn down in the 1980's.
  • The Carillon Tower now rests on this site formally occupied by the hotel.
  • Fire Insurance maps indicate a main roof height (excluding penthouse construction) of 132' (40 m).
  • Imploded on Sunday, November 6, 1988, with 200 pounds of explosive charges.
  • Some of the hotel's more famous guests included: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Elvis Presley, Huey Long, boxer Jack Dempsey and Babe Ruth.
