Faits

  • For many years this was Winston-Salem's premier hotel and a center for local social life.
  • It surpassed 8 West Third Street to become Winston-Salem's tallest commercial building until construction of the Nissen Building in 1927.
  • The building originally consisted of the eastern wing at the corner of Fifth and Cherry Streets. The cross wing at Fifth and Marshall was a later addition.
  • The Hotel Robert E. Lee was faced with artificial stone at the first and second levels, and with brick on the stories above.
  • It was demolished at 7:30 AM on March 26, 1972 to make way for the Winston-Salem Hyatt House (Embassy Suites Hotel Winston-Salem ).
  • The Sanborn Fire Insurance Map indicates a main roof height (excluding the penthouse construction) of 128 feet (39 meters).
