Faits

  • Proposed for a site overlooking the northwest corner of Grant Park, the Cuneo Building would have been the tallest building in Chicago at the time.
  • To accentuate the tower's height, the cladding was designed to progress from darker to lighter colors as the building rose.
  • The design called for an extremely narrow tower, rising to an even narrower tower about 3/5 of the way up. The massing was similar to the Willoughby Tower but even more elongated.
  • To accomodate the proposal the city council passed an amendment raising the height limit for the main shaft of the building from 80.5 meters (264 feet) to 134.1 meters (440 feet) as long as one side faced a park.
