Faits

  • Used to have a revolving restaurant and an observation deck - both were closed for security reasons in the 1980's.
  • The first 178 metres was cast in a continuous pour at an average of 18cm per hour, and to ensure the Tower went up perfectly vertically, a laser beam was used for guidance as the Tower lifted from the ground.
  • The walls of the Tower are 84cm thick at ground level and 38 cm thick at the top.
  • The Tower belongs to telecommunications parastatal Telkom.
  • The tower was originally named the JG Strijdom Tower after a former South African prime minister (1954 to 1958).
  • The public observation deck can accommodate 200 people and provides a 360-degree view of the city and surroundings through 24 large windows.
  • The restaurant floor revolved 1 to 3 times per hour in a counterclockwise direction. Even though it weighed 64 metric tons at full capacity, this smooth movement required only a three horsepower motor.
  • The 42 meter foundation reduced the tower's sway from several meters to only 41 cm on a windy day. A full sway would have lasted up to 8 seconds and taken the tower out of alignment with other masts.
  • During the years of its construction it gave the flat-dwelling residents of Hillbrow some headaches - construction took place six days a week, 24 hours a day.
  • Tallest Structure in South Africa
