Faits

  • The Nakagin Capsule Tower is the most famous example of metabolically designed architecture. It was the world's first capsule architecture building built for actual use.
  • Metabolism is a post-World-War-II Japanese architectural movement that fused ideas about architectural megastructures with those of organic biological growth.
  • Due to deterioration plans to demolish the the Nakagin Capsule Tower became unavoidable. Although an architectural conservation campaign was launched, demolition of the building in 2021 or 2022 is still likely to occur.
  • The capsules are clustered around two cores, each with a diagonally sloping roof and pointed top.
  • The capsules are prefabricated complete with furniture and appliances.
  • Each capsule measures 2.3m x 3.8m x 2.1m.
  • The capsules are connected to the main shafts by only 4 high-tension bolts and are designed to be replaceable.
  • Each box-shaped living unit is designed with built-in stereos and calculators for single business workers.
  • In 2022, after many years of uncertainty and attempts to save the building, it was decided the building would be dismantled, with many capsules being donated to museums or reused
  • Demolition period: April 12th, 2022 - December 29th, 2022
