  • The building was designed for the International Exhibition of Brussels 1958 and is designed to look like a crystalline iron molecule, magnified 165 billion times.
  • The structure sits on the Heysel Plateau and is made from aluminium clad steel and is supported by three bipods.
  • Movement within the structure is facilitated by escalators situated within the inclined tubes; the top sphere is reached by elevator.
  • The external distance between the spheres is 29 metres.
  • Atomium was not originally designed to be a permanent structure but its popularity has ensured its retention.
  • The escalators installed within the joining-tubes are among the longest in Europe, with the longest at 114.8 ft (35m).
  • The weight of each sphere is about 2400 tons.
  • At the time of construction, the speed of the elevator was the highest in Europe, at 16.4 ft (5m)/sec.
  • Atomium is supported by 123 piles which descend to a depth of 17.3 metres (57 feet).
  • The restaurant in the top sphere can seat 140 people.
  • The spheres are 18 metres (59 feet) in diameter.
  • The observation area in the top sphere can accomodate 250 people.
  • The structure is flexible, with the upper sphere able to move up to 18 inches. This movement is imperceptible to visitors.
  • Each floor has an area of around 240 m².
