  • The plan features seven aisles and a depth of 65 meters.
  • Originally a church, it was elevated to cathedral status in 1559.
  • The north tower with four clock faces is a dominant feature of the Antwerp skyline.
  • The Cathedral of Our Lady is the largest Gothic construction in the Benelux countries.
  • The original plan included a third tower in the center of the cathedral and with its 180 m height it would have been highest in the world at the time.
  • It takes 515 steps to the top of the tower.
  • In 1999, the cathedral was designated a part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The unfinished southern tower is 65.3 m high.
  • The unfinished central tower is 43 m high.
  • The central aisle of the nave is 28 m high. The nave itself has a width of maximum 53.5 m.
  • The roof has a surface area of more than 10 000 m².
  • For big events about 2400 seats are provided in the cathedral. Without any seats the cathedral could take 25 000 people.
  • There is a carillon located with 49 bells. From the regular bells, the Karolus (1507) is the heaviest and has a weight of about 6500 kg.
  • About 360 000 people each year pay a visit to the cathedral.
  • Most remarkable, on April 19 1717 Tsar Peter the Great climbed with a rope the cathedral in order to measure its height.
  • The cathedral counts 128 windows, whereof 55 are stained glass.
