Faits

  • The wooden spire was also destroyed and rebuilt several times. It was first blown down in 1362, was then struck by lightning in 1462 and finally rebuilt in stone in 1480. Fire in 1509 and the Civil War in 1643 also caused damage to the Cathedral, but each time it was rebuilt.
  • The cloisters of Norwich Cathedral are among the largest in Europe, measuring 55 metres (180 feet) square. Also of note are the 1,106 roof bosses, depicting the entire Christian history of the world.
  • The Spire is the second tallest in Great Britain at 96m (315ft).
  • Work on Norwich Cathedral began in 1096 under the guidance of Herbert de Losinga, the then Bishop of Thetford who also oversaw the construction of Hereford Cathedral. Losinga died in 1119.
  • Construction work continued after Losinga's death on the nave and central tower, finally completing in 1145. In 1170 a fire destroyed the timber roof, as did a riot in 1272. On both occasions, the roof was rebuilt on to the main stonework.
