Faits

  • The statue in front of the church was a gift from the USA to Iceland commemorating Leif Ericsson's discovery of North America.
  • The church was named for the Rev. Hallgrimur Petursson, who is considered one of the most important poets in Icelandic history. He lived from 1614-1674.
  • Iceland's remarkable geologic setting influenced the design of the church, which is an integration of the gothic style with the form of a sharp ice-capped mountain.
  • The steeple holds a small public observation platform accessible by elevator.
  • The smaller original organ for the choir has 10 stops, and was built by Theodor Frobenius & Sønner A.S. in Denmark in 1985.
  • Special organ concerts are held here every year during July and August.
  • The main doorway was designed by stained-glass artist Leifur Breidfjord.
  • The design began in 1937, and although it was not completed for almost 40 years it is fairly close in spirit to German Expressionism and other offshoots of the Art Nouveau movement.
  • The church contains two pipe organs, including Iceland's largest: a 25-ton grand organ with 72 stops built by Johannes Klais in Bonn, which was inaugurated in December 1992.
  • The building is adorned with two sculptures by Einar Jonsson, including Christ receiving the Holy Spirit in baptism, and one by Sigurjon Olafsson titled "Marurium".
  • This is the largest church in Iceland, with room in the nave for about 1200 persons.
  • Inside the steeple is a 29-bell carillon, with three large bells named Hallgrimur, Gudrun and Steinunn after the church's namesake and his wife and daughter.
