Faits

  • First mentioned in 1209, this was Riga's main church for centuries.
  • At the beginning of the 15th century a 136-meter tower was built on this church, but it collapsed in 1666.
  • At the height of 51 meters there is clock which shows only hours but not minutes. It is an exact copy of the clock from 1746.
  • Every three hours during the daytime the bells play the Latvian folk song "Riga Sounds".
  • From 1671 to 1690 the church had the highest known wooden construction in Europe, a 64,5-meter spire. It burned down in 1721.
  • The tower was rebuilt again from 1968 to 1973; now it has an escalator and a viewing platform 72 meters high.
  • The tower was rebuilt in 1746 at its present height, but fell during World War II on the 29th of June 1941.
