Faits

  • Became a provincially designated heritage site on March 30th, 1990.
  • Received national historic site status in 1980.
  • The original owner was The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway.
  • The design is similar to the The Plaza Residences in New York.
  • The current private owners have undertaken major renovations to restore the hotel to its original grandeur.
  • The hotel has had several owners over the years including Canadian National Railway.
  • The hotel was built to serve train passengers arriving at the historic Union Station, just one block east.
  • Original plans were to name the hotel The Selkirk.
  • 2 addional floors were added during construction.
  • Legend has it that the Fort Garry Hotel is haunted by a ghostly woman in a ballgown, a phantom diner and a mysterious ghost light that traverses the hallways of this grand hotel.
  • The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway also built the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa.
  • Named after the historic Upper Fort Garry fort; all that remains of the fort is the gate building situated in a park just east of the hotel.
