Faits

  • One of the landings over the lobby originally held a fountain with bronze statues by Frederick Hibbard in the likenesses of the sons of hotel founder James W. Stevens.
  • The lobby opens to a high two-story hall by the front entrance, with a grand staircase on each side. On the second floor there is a small lion's head fountain.
  • The lobby's ceiling holds a 100-foot long mural of a sky and clouds titled "Windows to the Sky" painted by A. Bonanno.
  • U.S. Presidents who have stayed at the Conrad Hilton Suite include Reagan, Clinton, and both Bushes.
  • Chicago's largest and most expensive hotel room is the 5000 ft² Conrad Hilton Suite on floors 29-30, which costs over $7000 per night. The suite has 24-hour maid and butler service, and its own elevator.
  • The hotel structure is indented by a total of nine courtyards on all sides.
  • An addition to the northwest was built in the mid-1980s with a parking garage, health club, and a large porte-cochere with a fountain.
  • When it first opened as the Stevens Hotel this was the largest hotel in the world.
  • The hotel is a major center for conventioneers at McCormick Place.
  • The Conrad Hilton Suite's famous guests have included Tony Blair, Alan Greenspan, Luciano Pavarotti, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Cher, James Earl Jones, and John Travolta.
  • The main roof originally featured a continuous 280-foot tile-paved covered promenade inside an open colonnade. The structure still exists, but the central part has been filled in.
  • The hotel's original lunch room was decorated with Japanese wall coverings and ceiling lamps.
