Faits

  • Oval windows in patients' rooms maximize lighting and views while minimizing noise intrusion and energy loss.
  • The curved concrete walls of the lobes are cantilevered over four 24-foot-high arches, and act as a structural shell as well as a facade.
  • This was one of the first "green" buildings in Chicago, maximizing energy efficiency through its shape and taking advantage of the insulating properties of concrete.
  • The building's cloverleaf pattern is a variation on the traditional cross-shaped hospital plan (e.g. as in the nearby Veterans and Wesley Hospitals).
  • The floorplans in the cloverleaf tower are designed so that nurses can monitor the rooms simply by turning around.
