Faits

  • The senior project engineer is Cecil Balmond, deputy chairman of Arup.
  • This is the largest single structure ever to have been commissioned for an Olympic games. It is also the world's largest artistic commission.
  • The structure manifests itself in the form of a giant twisted red steel lattice with a two-storey circular restaurant and observation deck.
  • The structure has been likened to a giant treble clef, a distorted trombone, an ampersand and a hubble-bubble.
  • The observation deck can be accessed by lift or via an external spiral staircase.
  • ArcelorMittal's CEO, Lakshmi Mittal personally provided £16 million of the projected £19.1 million cost with the remaining £3.1 million coming from the London Development Agency.
  • The structure incorporates 14,000 tonnes of steel.
  • The observation tower was conceived as the artistic centrepiece of the 2012 London Olympics.
