Faits

  • The profile of the tower and its gothic-inspired ornament are reminiscent of Eliel Saarinen's never-built but much-copied Chicago Tribune Tower design of 1922.
  • The tower rises from a 6-story base of Indiana limestone. There are setbacks at the 25th, 28th, and 32nd floor levels.
  • The Gulf Building (as it was originally known) was the tallest skyscraper in Houston from 1929 until 1963. In 1963 it was surpassed by the 800 Bell Street (then known as the Humble Building).
  • In 1965, a massive rotating sign bearing the logo of Gulf Oil topped the building. The "Lollipop," as it became to be known, was removed in 1974.
  • In 2018, the grand banking hall was turned into a food hall known as Finn Hall.
