  • The brick and stone walls vary in thickness from 10 feet 9 inches at the base to 5 feet 6 inches at the top.
  • On the south steps is the 1929 Henry Hering statue "Pro Patria." Cast by the Roman Bronze Works of Corona, NY, the 24-foot statue was the largest bronze sculpture ever cast in the United States up to that point.
  • Six figures representing Courage, Memory, Peace, Victory, Liberty, and Patriotism are found on each side of the structure.
  • As late as the 1950s, the southwest and southeast corners of this block were occupied by two churches, the First Baptist Church and the Second Presbyterian Church.
  • The cornerstone was laid by General John Joseph Pershing.
  • The Indiana World War Memorial was modeled after the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and resembles the Scottish Rite Temple in Washington, DC.
  • The memorial and museum were built to honor Indiana war dead from World War I, even though construction was not completed until after World War II.
  • The Haugh Building stood on this block from 1916 until 1926, when it was moved to the adjacent block to the east to permit construction.
  • The multi-block plaza was added to the National Register of Historic Places and named a National Historic Landmark in 1989.
