Faits

  • Once the head office of the Southern Pacific Railroad.
  • Was the tallest building west of the Mississippi when completed.
  • Steel frame structure with brick curtain walls clad in gray Colusa sandstone.
  • It was built by James Flood, the son of the Comstock silver millionaire whose house still sits on Nob Hill.
  • Designated city landmark on July 10, 1982.
  • The Woolworth store located in the Flood Building was the largest in the chain until 1992, when it was downsized. It closed in 1996.
  • The building celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2004.
  • Upon completion it was the largest building in the city.
  • The Flood Building replaced the Baldwin Hotel & Theater which burned to the ground in 1898.
  • One of the few buildings in the city to survive both the earthquake and fire with only minor damage.
