Faits

  • The upper ten floors comprise five floors of corporate offices and five floors of retail which is why the Bon Marche across the street is the city's largest department store since Frederick & Nelson closed.
  • Nordstrom began in Seattle in 1901 after the Alaska gold rush as the Wallin & Nordstrom Shoe Store.
  • On the tenth floor a candy kitchen in the 50's and 60's turned out over 500,000 pounds a year of the store's famous Frango chocolates. The kitchen remains today as an operating subsidiary of Citibank and the chocolates still sold at the local Bon Marche.
  • Landmark status was granted on September 10, 1997 following a 6-0 vote.
  • When completed in 1918 the store only had six floors, but was expanded to 10 in the early 1950s.
  • Frederick and Nelson closed in 1992 and the store sat empty for several years, but in 1998 Nordstrom bought the building and turned it into their flagship store.
  • When F&N first opened a "men-only" entrance on the 5th floor, gentlemen were spared the embarrassment of having to walk through the women's departments.
