Faits

  • This is the branch courthouse; Independence is the county seat of Jackson County, Missouri.
  • The meetings former President Harry S. Truman presided over in the early stages of his career in public service were at the Independence Courthouse – which explains why people who look for remnants of Truman's career, often find they are at the wrong courthouse.
  • Charles Keck is responsible for the carvings on the facade and the bronze statue of General Andrew Jackson – the county's namesake – that stands on the building's north side. At one point three of the upper floors were home to the county jail, with a capacity of 450 inmates.
  • The limestone tower is detailed with elaborate wrought grillwork. Marble from Italy, Germany, and France was used on the lobby walls, floors, columns, and pilasters.
