Faits

  • The Cathedral burned in a massive fire on March 14, 2005. The roof collapsed into the sanctuary, but the steeple remained. The fire was soon determined to be arson.
  • Saint Raphael's is one of the tallest buildings in downtown Madison. It is constructed of sandstone in a Romanesque Revival style.
  • On June 11, 2007, the Bishop of the Madison Diocese announced that the damaged St. Raphael Cathedral will be demolished and replaced with a new cathedral church on the same site.
  • Made a cathedral in 1866, it was closely associated with the Irish community in Madison, and is considered one of the most important of Madison's pioneer era landmarks.
  • This building was never intended to serve as a cathedral, but was elevated to that status in 1945, when Madison became the seat of the 11-county diocese.
