Faits

  • The exterior of the Nissen Building is clad in buff brick laid in Flemish bond. Ornamentation is of granite, marble, and limestone.
  • W.M. Nissen built the building with money from his famous Wagon Works (a company dating back to 1787), and lived on the 20th floor of the building.
  • It was the first air-conditioned building in the Southeast.
  • Office space was used for many years by the U.S. Air Force and the headquarters for the Office of Flying Safety.
  • Listed in the National Register of Historic Places on March 17, 1983.
  • It succeeded the Hotel Robert E. Lee as the tallest buildng in the city and the Jefferson Standard Building in Greensboro as the tallest in the state.
  • After several years of complex negociations, the building is slated for conversion to apartments and condominiums.
  • It held this rank until completion of the Reynolds Building on April 27, 1929.
