Faits

  • Hailed by the London Daily Express as "one of the three most beautiful public utility buildings in the world".
  • Located directly above the main entrance off are a trio of 8-foot tall figures representing Power, Light and Heat.
  • For decades this stood as the only high-rise in the northwestern portion of downtown.
  • A golden statue of Electra crowns the roof.
  • Originally entitled "Divinity of Light," Electra was crafted by Edward Field Sanford, Jr.
  • Electra stands 23 feet tall, weighs 4,000 pounds, and was originally cast in bronze and then gold leafed.
  • Locally referred to as "Miss Electra," its erection in 1926 was controversial due to its depiction of a nude woman.
  • The building gradually becomes narrower as it approaches the sloped roof through a series of dramatic step-backs.
  • Connected via an atrium with the newer Alabama Power Headquarters.
  • This is Birmingham's finest example of the art deco style.
  • Electra was completely cleaned and regilded in 1996 to celebrate her 70th birthday.
