Faits

  • This building was a commercial hotel and considered on a par with the best in Metro Kansas City between 1951 and 1974. As part of a renovation in 1961, the name was changed to "Town House Motor Inn" theoretically to sound contemporary..
  • The 300 room hotel had four suites on the top floor and the cost of construction was uniquely financed by approximately 70% public subscription. Federal grants and subsidies and tax breaks were unknown in this era.
  • Integrated teams of the old AFC which came to play the Kansas City (MO) Chiefs and the old Kansas City (MO) Baseball Athletics had to stay in Kansas City, Kansas because the major hotels on the Missouri side refused to accept "non white" people as guests.
  • Before the Negro Leagues ended play in 1955, the teams who played the Kansas City (Mo) Monarchs also had to stay in private homes or the Kansas City, Kansas hotel.
