Faits

  • The banking hall at the building's south end is a rare instance of a Miesian rotunda. The circular room has glass walls and a single column which flares out at the ceiling.
  • An early version of this plan called for two towers: an office building and a hotel.
  • The building's lead architect, George Schipporeit, also designed Chicago's Lake Point Tower and the Rotary Center a block away.
  • A large part of the building's lot is filled by a landscaped plaza, which adds to the open space around Fountain Square at the heart of downtown Evanston.
  • This is the only skyscraper on any street anywhere named Orrington (Evanston has the only Orrington Avenue in existence).
  • This was the first skyscraper ever built in Evanston.
  • For several years this was linked by a skybridge to the now-demolished Washington National Insurance Company Building, across the alley to the east.
  • This is the tallest building between Chicago and Milwaukee.
