Faits

  • In 2000, the State of Michigan granted Lansing $3,941,600 for riverfront development at the Ottawa Street Power Station pending a development deal for the vacant structure.
  • The Ottawa Street Power Station is an electricity and steam generation plant located along the Grand River in downtown Lansing.
  • It combines the PWA Moderne style, with its classical and formal character, with the angularity of the Art Deco style.
  • The building's base is of polished black granite, which symbolizes the combustion of coal.
  • The upper stories are faced with brick, changing color to purple gray and progressively lighter shades of red, orange, yellow, and yellowish gray brick toward the top.
  • Doors of polished metal and glass ornament the main entrance.
  • The Christman Company will act as the developer for the project; Accident Fund will lease the property from them with an option to buy.
  • The attached, low-rise "screenhouse" building along the north side of the building rises to a height of 66 feet to the roof, and 70 feet to the top of the parapet.
  • The station shares its address with a smaller building just a block north of the vacant power station.
