Faits

  • Renamed First Union Tower from Dominion Bank Tower on October 15, 1993, to reflect First Union's acquisition of Dominion.
  • The construction of the tower involved the demolition of the Hunter Viaduct in spring 1990.
  • Its crown pays homage to the historic Hotel Roanoke located just north of the edifice.
  • The tower is topped with a copper colored dome and is illuminated at night with 135 separate floodlights.
  • Its crown consists of a 50-foot tall, vented metal pyramid topped with a 48-foot tall spire.
  • On October 29, 1990, a construction worker fell to his death after slipping when moving a support table to where a crane could hook onto it from the seventh floor.
  • The tower contains 1,260 separate windows on its exterior.
  • There is no numbered thirteenth floor.
  • This is both the tallest building in Roanoke and western Virginia.
