Faits

  • The city of Clearwater was interested in obtaining this site, known as Smith's Finger, to use as a park – but the city was unable to agree to a purchase price with the owners. After Port Builders secured the site for development in 1973, the city tried to negotiate another deal. The $1 million asking price was deemed too high.
  • When the building developed water leaks, it was discovered that the exterior panels, which were made of wood with a rock-like coating, were deteriorating. The building's exterior was renovated for $3.2 million in 1992. New postmodern elements and lights were also added.
  • Chief architect for the building's renovation was Steve Klar, of Walker & Associates, who went on to open Klar & Klar Architects in 1992.
