Faits

  • Overlooking the Detroit River and Belle Isle a few minutes east of downtown, the Whittier Arms was once one of Detroit's finest hotels. As the neighborhood gradually declined, the building was converted to senior residences and finally closed in 2001.
  • It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
  • The tower was built so that it can support another 14 stories on top of the current building.
  • The former owner of the building had planned to construct a restaurant on top of the tower, and even got as far as constructing the two elevator shafts you see today that rise above the roof on both ends. The plan died with him in a plane crash.
  • Because of the unstable ground near the Detroit River the architect consulted Japanese engineers on how to build this apartment hotel who were skilled in building on soggy ground.
