Faits

  • The building was damaged by an IRA car bomb on 3rd March 1973.
  • Known universally as 'The Old Bailey' for the street on which it stands, London's Central Criminal Courts is one of the world's most famous legal buildings. The present building was opened by King Edward VII in 1907, but a courthouse has occupied the site since 1539. Among the famous trials conducted here are those of Oscar Wilde, Dr Crippen, William Joyce ('Lord Haw Haw'), the Kray Twins and the 'Yorkshire Ripper'.
  • The Old Bailey, an Edwardian Baroque building designed by Edward Mountford, is crowned by a golden statue of Justice, blindfolded and carrying scales and a sword. A plaque over one of the entrances reads "Defend the Children of the Poor & Punish the Wrongdoer'.
