Faits

  • Planned in 1970, Mondial House was originally conceived to house Europe's largest international telecommunications switching centre.
  • Mondial House was designed so that it would not impede the sight lines of St. Paul's Cathedral.
  • The building was constructed on the churchyard of All Hallows the Great.
  • The upper receding tiers of Mondial House resembled those of a ziggurat and were clad in fibreglass.
  • In the 1980s the building acquired the telephone exchange responsibilities originally vested in the Faraday Building.
  • The fire station in the northwest wing was incorporated into Watermark Place.
  • Mondial House was described by Prince Charles as "dreadful"; he compared it to a giant word processor.
  • On 31st December 2004, Mondial House ceased to be an operational British Telecom building.
