Faits

  • In 1773, the Boston Tea Party was launched from Old South when a meeting of 5,000 men to discuss the tea tax ended in disarray.
  • In 1872, the Great Fire almost claimed this building; valiant efforts saved it while flames consumed its neighbors across the street.
  • Members of the Old South's congregation included Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams and African American poet, Philis Wheatley.
  • The building was the largest building in colonial Boston and colonists gathered here to challenge British rule.
  • As punishment for the Boston Tea Party, British troops desecrated the building by ripping out the pulpit and pews and burning them.
  • The building was established as a museum in 1877.
  • Old South Meeting House is a National Historic Landmark and one of the most significant buildings in the history of the US.
