Faits

  • The Great Northern Railroad Building was built by James J. Hill, a St. Paul Railroad Baron. Known as the "Empire Builder," Hill was instrumental in opening up land-based trade to the northwestern United States with the construction of a railway from St. Paul to Seattle via Glacier National Park.
  • It was replaced by a larger building, now known as 180 East Fifth, in 1916. This building became a records storage facility.
  • A meticulous renovation was completed in 2004, turning the dilapidated building into the Great Northern Lofts, among the most expensive condominiums in Lowertown.
  • The units feature barrel-vaulted brick ceilings.
  • The structural engineers were recognized with a 2004-2005 Grand Award for Engineering Excellence by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Minnesota for the building's renovation.
