Faits

  • Currently the leading proposal for the Tokyo area's new TV Tower, with the main competition being the Saitama Tower proposal, and other proposals including Taito World Tower, and new towers in Adachi and Ikebukuro.
  • Construction costs are estimated at 50 billion yen, of which Tobu Railway, owner of the site, has offered to contribute to.
  • Construction is expected to finish in the spring of 2011.
  • A competition was long running for the location of the tower, the Saitama Shintoshin area being edged out by the Sumida location because of the influence of tourists visiting the site.
  • The tower will be used to broadcast digital television and digital radio to the Greater Tokyo Metropolitan area.
  • Two observation decks are included in the design, for people to look out over Greater Tokyo.
  • The tower is being built by a consortium of 7 radio and television companies, including NHK Broadcasting Corporation.
  • The tower will be called The Sumida Tower, as well as Tokyo Tower II.
  • Also known informally as the 'Second Tokyo Tower' or dai-ni-Tokyo-tawaa, to distinguish it from the existing Tokyo Tower in Minato-ku.
  • Two skyscraper buildings are included in the project to facilitate offices and restaurants.
  • This is the world's joint tallest telecommunications tower alongside Canton Tower.
  • The tower is named after the first Tokyo Tower, which was built in 1958 and is still a famous Tokyo landmark. However, at only 333 m the old tower will be dwarfed by this new Tokyo icon.
  • The tower will be the tallest structure in East Asia, alongside the Canton Tower .
