Faits

  • The station was built by the Canadian Northern Railway & National Transcontinental/Grand Trunk Pacific Railway.
  • Union Station was designed by the same architects responsible for Grand Central Terminal in New York City.
  • The owners of Union Station also built the luxurious Hotel Fort Garry just blocks away to handle the masses of people arriving by passenger rail.
  • The Winnipeg Railway Museum is housed in Union Station and features the “Countess of Dufferin”, the first locomotive on the Canadian prairies, plus a variety of vintage railcars, cabooses, a Jordan spreader from 1911, technical displays and a gift shop.
  • The name was changed to VIA Station in 1978 when the federal government amalgamated passenger rail service under one carrier.
  • Designated a National Heritage Railway Station in 1989.
  • Operations were merged into Canadian National Railways in 1919.
