Faits

  • The building was built 1853-55 as the Public Record Office, in a Perpendicular Gothic style.
  • The Public Record Office was designed to bring together important national documents from various sites across London, including the famous Domesday Book. The building has the capacity to hold 1.4 million volumes, and was the world's first fireproof building.
  • When the Public Record Office moved to new premises at Kew, the building became part of King's College and re-opened in 2002 as the Maughan Library and Information Services Centre.
  • This was constructed as London's first fireproof building.
  • In 1891-96, an extension was built to the west of the original building, providing an entrance onto Chancery Lane.
