Faits

  • The memorial arch was salvaged and reinstalled in the atrium of McNamara Alumni Center.
  • The stadium's first football game was played October 4, 1924, with the Gophers winning 14-0 over the University of North Dakota Flickertails, though the building wasn't fully completed until November.
  • The stadium was named in honor of the soldiers who died in World War I.
  • The seating capacity was approximately 50,200.
  • Thirty arched doorways, eight feet wide, enabled the stadium to be emptied in 7 1/2 minutes.
  • Two tile-roofed end towers rose slightly above the main parapet.
  • The main parapet's coping nearly matched the cornices of nearby university buildings, at 57 feet above grade.
  • 62 rows of seating were spaced two feet two inches apart, back to back.
  • The field was about seven feet below grade.
