Faits

  • The cathedral's design is the result of a competition for which there were 183 entries, as a result of which, five were short listed.
  • The exterior is of red brick.
  • The interior is expressed in sandstone from Somerset with white floors of Italian marble.
  • The interior includes works by artists such as Vernon Hill, Eric Gill, Moira Forsyth, John Hutton and John Cobbett.
  • The cathedral sits on 778 piles, sunk to a depth of 15 metres (50 feet).
  • Although started in 1936, construction was interrupted (due to the outbreak of the Second World War) for around ten years due to shortages of both money and materials until 1952; consecration was undertaken in 1961.
  • It is around 160 feet to the top of the tower which is topped with the 15-foot tall Guildford Golden Angel, a statue which turns in the wind.
  • The foundation stone was laid on July 22 1936 by The Most Reverand Dr. Cosmo Gordon Lang.
  • Guildford Cathedral is the only new Anglican cathedral built on a new site in southern England since the Reformation.
  • The cathedral is the building outside which devil-child Damien has a fit in the 1976 movie 'The Omen'.
