Faits

  • This is the oldest lighthouse on Lake Superior still operating at full capacity.
  • The lighthouse tower is constructed of prefabricated iron rods and legs, and the tower is suspended approximately 17 feet above the ground on four legs and is only accesible from the second floor of the attached house.
  • The station was completely automated in 1971, and the 11 buildings at the station were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
  • The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society was formed in 1978 to preserve artifecats and the history of the Great Lakes, with the society moving to the Whitefish Point Light Station in 1985, and establishing the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.
