Faits

  • This was the tallest of three towers built by King Herod the Great, and the only one that remains partly standing. It was originally 145 feet tall.
  • Named after Herod's brother, the other two towers were named after his wife, Miriam, and his friend, Hippicus, and stood 132 feet tall.
  • Today only the rebuilt base of the tower is intact, and serves as part of the exibition at the David Citadel Museum.
  • The three towers fell into disrepair and were successively repaired, rebuilt and destroyed by Romans, Crusaders, Mamelukes and Ottomans.
