Faits

  • The history of the priory dates back over 900 years.
  • The priory is Norman and Perpendicular Gothic in style and includes 15th century English stained glass windows as well as a mediaeval floor.
  • Between 1450 to 1500, the original church was expanded; the tower is similar to that of Gloucester Cathedral which was built by the same stone masons. During this period, the windows at the west end and North Transept were donated by Henry VII and Richard III.
  • The priory suffered under the Dissolution of the Monasteries initiated by Henry VIII in 1539.
  • The official completion date of the priory is unknown.
  • Cited in Simon Jenkins' 'England's Thousand Best Churches'.
  • The priory is so-called because it came under the jurisdiction of Westminster Abbey, hence its lower status.
  • The interior features Roman style arches and columns.
