Faits

  • The terminal is linked by 13.5 kilometres (8.4 miles) of subterranean tunnels.
  • During construction, the height of cranes was limited to 43 metres (141 feet) so as not to interfere with the airport's radar.
  • The long-span roof was manufactured off-site and installed in sections.
  • The terminal is Britain's largest free-standing building.
  • 85% of the terminal's heating originates from excess heat generated by Heathrow's heat and power station and is piped via an underground tunnel.
  • In 2008 the building won the Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence, the world's highest accolade for this discipline.
  • 85% of rainwater hitting the building is recycled for non-potable use.
  • The building employed around 20,000 construction workers.
  • Floors are of polished wood and marble whilst the walls are lined with opaque panels of glass.
  • The leather seating has been designed by Foster + Partners.
