Faits

  • The building's concrete structure contains 50% fly ash, the product remaining after the burning of coal, from the Coal Creek Generating Station, north of Bismarck, North Dakota.
  • The long east-west orientation maximizes the amount of natural light penetrating the building's interior. Nearly windowless east and west ends reduce unwanted solar heat gain.
  • A 200 kW wind turbine provides 15 percent of the building's electricity needs.
  • The neighboring Arbor Lake is utilized as a heat sink for geothermal heating and cooling.
  • Great River Energy is the second largest provider of electricity in Minnesota. This headquarters buildings is the first in the state to be designed and constructed at the LEED platinum standard.
  • The architects were recognized with a 2009 Honor Award for Architecture by the American Institute of Architects, Minnesota Chapter.
