Hobart is Australia's southernmost capital city with European settlement in 1804, making it the second oldest European settlement in Australia after Sydney. Hobart Town (as it was known until 1881) was proclaimed a city in 1842. Hobart is on the Derwent River, has one of the world's finest deep water harbours and the majestic Mt Wellington in the background. The population of the Hobart metropolitan area is 200,000. Tasmania is renowned world wide for its pristine wilderness areas. In recent years, Hobart has participated in the property boom that has affected the rest of the country's big cities. In 1973 Hobart boasted Australia's first legal casino which is housed in Wrest Point Tower which is still the states tallest building. The city continues to attract a strong progressive community, including a vocal community of environmental activists and supporters who are hoping to make a difference in the state's current hot-button issue, the logging of old-growth forests. Maximum temperatures in winter average 12 degrees C, and in summer average 21.5 degrees C. The mild temperate climate make the summer months ideal for outdoor activity.
