Leeds is one of the largest cities in the North of England and the capital of West Yorkshire. It is also at the centre of a conurbation of around 2 million people. Like all northern British cities, Leeds grew up during the industrial revolution, a period in which the city generated much of its wealth. Today, Leeds is a cosmopolitan city with many attractions. It has the region's best shopping, a growing nightlife with over 200 bars and clubs in the city centre, a number of cultural attractions including the Royal Armoury, the West Yorkshire Playhouse and the Leeds Opera House. Leeds is also a financial and legal centre, with growing importance outside London. Leeds has few tall buildings. The majority are council-built tower blocks on the city's outskirts, but recent years have seen a growing demand for city centre apartments which has led to a corresponding rise in the number of residential high-rise buildings being built. This, coupled with the city centre's flourishing retail and leisure scene has made Leeds one of the UK's fastest growing cities.
