Klaipeda is one of the oldest cities in Lithuania. The city was founded in 1252 as Teutonic Knights built the Memelburg castle on the mouth of River Dane. Klaipeda was a German city for centuries and was known as Memel. It became part of Lithuania only in 1923. The city still has some old German "fachwerk" buildings which testify the city's Germanic past and its interesting history.
Nowadays Klaipeda is one of the major economic centers of Lithuania, the only country's seaport and an important industry and logistics center. Klaipeda has an established and successfully working Free Economic Zone which offers lower taxes for the investors, this also was one of the most important keys of Klaipeda's current economic success. The city is connected with capital Vilnius and country's second biggest city Kaunas with a highway what makes it easily accessible from various points of the country and makes the seaport work more efficient.
Klaipeda does not have many high-rise buildings except few residential high-rises built in Soviet period. Although in the recent years some large real estate companies brought their attention to Klaipeda and started developing various projects which also include a number of high-rise office and residential buildings. Klaipeda is located on a flat area what makes it more attractive for high-rise constructions, so there is a big probability to see many new high-rise building projects in the future.
