Groningen, the capital of the province Groningen is oftenly called the 'Metropolis of the north'. It is without a doubt the largest city north of the Randstad, and serves the north of the country on educational, cultural and governmental perspective. It's economy wasn't the best the last century, mainly because it's far away from the centre of the Netherlands, but things are improving since one of the largest natural gas fields in the world was found near Groningen. Since then, Groningen brought billions into the national treasury, and it was rewarded. The national headquarters of the gas company, the Nederlandse Gasunie was built here, and since their arrival they have been investing in Groningen. Groningen is well know of it's university and many studies which are mainly responsable for the young population Groningen has. It is regarded as one of the most vibrant cities in the Netherlands. It is also one of the last cities in the Netherlands that allows bars and pubs to be open untill the early morning. For almost 400 years the Martinitoren has been the city's highest building, but things are about to change. Many projects have been launched to build higher and higher, and it's just a matter of time untill someone proposes a building higher than the Martinitoren.
