Viking king Olav Trygvasson established the city in 997. The city was named Nidaros, after the river flowing through the city. Nidaros was the capital of Norway from the 12th. century until the 14th. The cathedral Nidarosdomen was the most important symbol of the city and relics of Norway's patron saint was kept here. The city has been destroyd by great fires and war several times through the ages, and have lost much of its historic wooden buildings and complexes in the city centre. The city was renamed Trondheim in 1931 and is today the third largest city of Norway. Industry, research and trade is the main source of income as well as tourism, since Trondheim is famous for its historic wooden districts and great historic attractions.
